This Viral Dumpling Lasagna recipe is a creative fusion dish that layers flavorful ground chicken dumpling filling and wonton wrappers steamed to tender perfection. Featuring a savory mix of ground chicken, napa cabbage, mushrooms, aromatic ginger and garlic, and seasoned with sesame oil, oyster sauce, and soy sauce, this dish offers a delightful twist on traditional lasagna by using wonton wrappers as pasta layers, all steamed gently for a light yet satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Dumpling Filling

  • 1 Pound Ground chicken thighs and breast
  • 1 Cup Napa Cabbage, chopped
  • 3 Green Onions, finely sliced
  • 1 Tablespoon Fresh Ginger, minced
  • 2 Cloves Garlic, mashed
  • 6 Mushrooms, finely chopped
  • ½ Teaspoon Baking Soda (optional but recommended for fluffier texture)
  • 2 Tablespoons Sesame Oil
  • 2 Tablespoons Vinegar
  • 2 Tablespoons Oyster Sauce
  • ¼ Cup Low Sodium Soy Sauce

Assembly and Garnish

  • 1 Package Wonton Wrappers
  • Green Onions (for garnish)
  • Chili Oil (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dumpling filling: In a large bowl, combine the ground chicken, chopped napa cabbage, green onions, minced ginger, mashed garlic, finely chopped mushrooms, baking soda if using, sesame oil, vinegar, oyster sauce, and low sodium soy sauce. Mix thoroughly with your hands or a fork until all ingredients are well incorporated into a uniform mixture.
  2. Layer the lasagna: Set up your ramekins or mugs. Start by spooning a layer of the chicken mixture onto the bottom of each ramekin, then place a wonton wrapper on top. Continue alternating layers of the chicken filling and wonton wrappers, gently pressing down to compact each layer, until the ramekin is almost full.
  3. Add water and seal: Pour one-third cup of water into each ramekin before adding the final two wonton wrappers on top to seal the layers inside. This water helps create steam during cooking, keeping the dumplings moist and tender.
  4. Steam the dumpling lasagna: Place the filled ramekins into a Dutch oven or large pot filled with water reaching halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Cover the pot with a lid and steam for about 20 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked and the wonton wrappers become soft and tender.
  5. Serve: Carefully remove the ramekins from the steamer. Garnish with sliced green onions and a drizzle of chili oil before serving warm directly from the ramekin.

Notes

  • Using baking soda in the filling helps achieve a fluffier, lighter texture but is optional.
  • Be careful when removing ramekins from the steamer as they will be hot and contain steam.
  • Use low sodium soy sauce to control salt content and enhance flavors without overpowering.
  • For a spicier kick, increase the amount of chili oil as garnish.
  • Ensure the water level in the pot reaches halfway up the ramekins for effective steaming without water spilling inside.
