This recipe for The Best Cajun Shrimp offers a quick and flavorful dish featuring perfectly cooked large shrimp sautéed with a zesty homemade Cajun seasoning and a rich garlic-herb butter. Ready in under 15 minutes, it makes a perfect appetizer or main course packed with bold southern spices.

Ingredients

Shrimp

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined (450g)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (for rinsing the shrimp)
  • ½ tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt, as needed

Flavored Butter

  • 2 tablespoons room temperature butter
  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced or grated
  • 1 tablespoon cilantro or parsley leaves, minced
  • 1 ½ teaspoons homemade cajun seasoning (see tips)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp: Place the shrimp in a colander and toss with ¼ teaspoon salt. Let them sit for 1 minute to draw out any excess moisture, then rinse them thoroughly and pat very dry with paper towels to ensure they sear properly.
  2. Make flavored butter: In a small bowl, combine the room temperature butter with minced garlic, chopped cilantro or parsley, and the Cajun seasoning. Mix everything well until fully incorporated and set aside to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Cook the shrimp: Heat the olive oil in a wide skillet over medium heat. Add the shrimp in a single layer; it is fine if a few overlap slightly. Cook the shrimp for about 1 minute until they just start turning pink on one side.
  4. To finish: Lower the heat to medium-low and add the prepared Cajun butter to the skillet. Stir well to coat all the shrimp evenly with the butter and spices. Continue cooking and stirring gently for 1 to 2 minutes until the shrimp are firm, opaque, and cooked through without overcooking.

Notes

  • For the homemade Cajun seasoning, a blend of paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, oregano, thyme, salt, and black pepper works perfectly.
  • Make sure to thoroughly dry the shrimp before cooking to get a good sear.
  • You can substitute parsley for cilantro depending on your preference.
  • Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.
  • Pair with rice, grits, or crusty bread to soak up the flavorful butter sauce.
