This Sweet and Spicy Almond Butter Date Latte is a cozy, flavorful coffee alternative that combines creamy oat milk, rich almond butter, naturally sweet Medjool dates, warming cinnamon, a hint of cayenne pepper, and aromatic orange peel. Blended to a smooth, luscious texture and served with strongly brewed coffee, this latte is perfect for a comforting morning boost or an indulgent afternoon treat.

Ingredients

Milk Mixture

  • 1 1/2 cups (360 mL) unsweetened oat milk
  • 2 tablespoons creamy almond butter
  • 2 soft large Medjool dates, pitted and torn in half
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (plus extra for dusting)
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 1 large strip of orange peel
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla paste

Coffee

  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup (60 - 120 mL) strongly brewed hot coffee

Instructions

  1. Simmer the milk mixture: In a small or medium saucepan, combine the oat milk, almond butter, pitted dates, ground cinnamon, cayenne pepper, orange peel, and vanilla paste. Bring the mixture to a rapid simmer over medium heat and maintain the simmer for 10 minutes, whisking occasionally to incorporate the ingredients and prevent scorching.
  2. Blend to smoothness: Remove the saucepan from the heat and carefully transfer the hot milk mixture to a high-powered blender. Remove the center cap of the blender lid and cover the opening with a dish towel to allow steam to escape safely. Blend on high until the mixture becomes very smooth and creamy, and all pieces of dates and orange peel are fully pulverized. Taste the latte base and adjust the seasoning, adding more cinnamon or cayenne if desired.
  3. Assemble and serve: Pour the strongly brewed hot coffee evenly into two coffee mugs. Then gently pour the blended almond butter date milk into each mug. Sprinkle a little extra ground cinnamon on top for garnish and serve immediately to enjoy warm.

Notes

  • Using unsweetened oat milk keeps the latte naturally sweetened only by dates, but you can adjust milk type if preferred.
  • Medjool dates add rich sweetness and a creamy texture but substitute with other soft dried dates if necessary.
  • Ensure your orange peel is free of white pith to avoid bitterness.
  • Adjust the cayenne pepper to suit your spice tolerance for a mild or more pronounced kick.
  • Strongly brewed coffee is recommended to balance the sweetness and richness of the milk mixture.
  • This recipe makes two servings; adjust ingredient quantities accordingly for more servings.
  • Be cautious when blending hot liquids to avoid steam buildup and potential splatter.
