Saltine Cracker Toffee is a deliciously simple and crunchy treat combining salty crackers with rich buttery toffee, bittersweet chocolate, and a sprinkle of nuts. Perfect as an easy homemade gift or a sweet snack, this recipe delivers a perfect balance of salty and sweet in every bite.

Ingredients

Crackers

  • 24 saltine crackers (a little over half a sleeve)

Toffee Mixture

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar

Topping

  • 12 oz. bittersweet chocolate morsels
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or other nuts

Instructions

  1. Prepare oven and baking pan: Heat the oven to 325°F. Line a 13- x 9-inch baking pan with aluminum foil or parchment paper to ensure easy removal and cleanup.
  2. Add crackers to baking pan: Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer evenly across the lined baking pan to create a base for the toffee.
  3. Make toffee mixture: In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Stir in the light brown sugar and cook slowly until the mixture is smooth and starts to bubble. Continue cooking for 3 minutes, stirring gently to avoid burning.
  4. Add toffee mixture to crackers, and bake: Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged crackers. If crackers float, gently press them back down with a knife tip to ensure even coverage. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes to caramelize.
  5. Add chocolate chips: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the bittersweet chocolate morsels evenly on top. Return the pan to the oven for about 1 minute until the chocolate begins to melt and soften.
  6. Spread melted chocolate and add nuts: Using a spatula or knife, spread the melted chocolate evenly over the surface. Sprinkle the chopped pecans or preferred nuts on top to add crunch and flavor.
  7. Cool until firm: Allow the toffee to stand at room temperature until it is nearly set, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours until fully firm. Once chilled, break into pieces and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Use aluminum foil or parchment paper for easy removal and cleanup.
  • Be cautious when cooking the toffee mixture to avoid burning the sugar.
  • If you prefer, other nuts such as walnuts or almonds can be substituted for pecans.
  • Store the toffee in the refrigerator to maintain its crunch and prevent melting.
  • This recipe serves well as a homemade gift during holidays or special occasions.
