A classic Patty Melt recipe featuring juicy ground beef patties, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese sandwiched between toasted rye bread with a touch of mayonnaise. This comforting, savory sandwich is pan-cooked to golden perfection and perfect for a satisfying lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

For the Caramelized Onions

  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter

For the Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Assembling

  • 8 slices rye bread (or your favorite sandwich bread)
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting bread and cooking patties)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally until they are deeply browned and caramelized. Reduce heat to medium-low as needed to prevent burning. Once done, transfer the onions to a plate and wipe the skillet clean.
  2. Prepare the Patties: Season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Shape the beef into 4 patties, roughly the size of the bread slices you will use.
  3. Cook the Patties: Heat the skillet over medium-high heat and add the patties in batches if necessary. Cook each side for about 3 minutes until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties and set aside.
  4. Toast the Bread: Wipe the skillet clean again and melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add 4 slices of bread and toast them until golden brown. Remove 2 slices and flip the other 2 slices in the skillet to toast the other side.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: On the toasted side of the bread still in the skillet, place a slice of Swiss cheese, then a cooked patty, followed by caramelized onions and another slice of cheese. Spread 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise on the untoasted side of the 2 remaining toasted bread slices and place them mayonnaise side down over the assembled sandwiches in the skillet.
  6. Cook the Patty Melts: Reduce heat to medium-low and cook the sandwiches for 3 to 4 minutes, flipping them halfway through. Cook until the bread is nicely toasted on both sides and the cheese has melted completely.
  7. Repeat for Remaining Ingredients: Remove the finished sandwiches from the skillet and repeat the toasting and assembling process with the remaining bread slices, patties, onions, and cheese.
  8. Serve: Slice the patty melts in half and serve immediately with chips or french fries for a delicious meal.

Notes

  • Use rye bread for an authentic flavor, but any sandwich bread works well.
  • Control the heat carefully when caramelizing onions to avoid burning.
  • You can substitute Swiss cheese with cheddar or provolone if preferred.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the ground beef before shaping patties.
  • Serve with pickles or your favorite sides for a more complete meal.
