This Nutritional Yeast Tofu recipe transforms extra firm tofu into a crispy, golden, and flavorful plant-based dish using a simple seasoning blend and either air frying or baking. Perfect for a quick, nutritious, and vegan-friendly snack or protein addition to any meal.

Ingredients

Tofu

  • 1 block (about 14 oz / 400 grams) extra firm tofu

Seasonings

  • 4 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. Drain Tofu: Open the package of tofu and drain off any excess water. Do not press or dry it further to maintain its moisture for proper texture.
  2. Tear Tofu: Using your hands, tear the tofu into irregular bite-sized chunks and place them into a mixing bowl.
  3. Season Tofu: Add nutritional yeast, cornstarch, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder to the tofu. Toss well to evenly coat all pieces with the seasoning mixture. Cook immediately without letting it sit to ensure maximum crispiness.
  4. Air Fry Tofu: Lightly grease the bottom of the air fryer basket with a brush of oil. Arrange tofu pieces in a single layer. Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 15 to 20 minutes, tossing halfway through, until golden and super crunchy.
  5. Bake Tofu: Alternatively, spread the tofu evenly on a lined baking tray. Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F (218°C) for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden and crispy, flipping once halfway through baking for even texture.

Notes

  • Do not press or dry the tofu before cooking to retain moisture and achieve better texture.
  • For best results, toss the tofu in seasoning and cook immediately; letting it sit can make it soggy.
  • You can use either the air fryer or the oven based on your preference and equipment availability.
  • Adjust seasoning quantities to taste if preferred.
  • Use a brush of oil to prevent sticking in the air fryer basket but avoid excess oil for a lower-fat option.
  • Serve with your favorite dipping sauce or as a protein topping for salads and bowls.
