This Instant Pot Applesauce recipe is a quick and easy way to make homemade applesauce with minimal effort. Using a variety of apples, lemon juice, and optional cinnamon, this naturally sweet and flavorful applesauce is pressure-cooked to perfection and can be enjoyed as a healthy snack or dessert.

Ingredients

Apples

  • 3 lbs. apples, about 6–7 (Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Delicious)

Additional Ingredients

  • 1 small lemon, juice of
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 1/2–1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples: Wash the apples well. For unpeeled apples, quarter and core them, then cut each quarter in half. For peeled apples, peel them first, then quarter, core, and cut each quarter in half.
  2. Fill the Instant Pot: Place the prepared apples in the bottom of the Instant Pot insert. Add the lemon juice, water, and if using, the cinnamon stick or ground cinnamon.
  3. Pressure cook: Attach the lid and ensure the vent is in the SEALED position. Select the pressure cooker setting, set it to HIGH PRESSURE, and manually adjust the time to 6 minutes.
  4. Natural release: When the cooking time has finished, allow the steam to release naturally for about 6 minutes. Carefully move the vent to the OPEN position, being cautious of any remaining steam. Remove the lid and let the mixture cool slightly. Then remove the cinnamon stick if used.
  5. Mash or puree: For apples cooked with skins on, use an immersion blender directly in the pot or transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor and puree until smooth or to desired consistency. If the apples were peeled before cooking, simply mash the apples with a potato masher, fork, or slotted spoon.

Notes

  • Using a mix of sweet and tart apples adds complexity to the flavor of the applesauce.
  • You can adjust the sweetness by adding a bit of sugar or honey if desired, although many apples are sweet enough on their own.
  • Store applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for longer storage.
  • The natural release step is important to prevent sputtering and ensure safety when opening the Instant Pot.
  • For chunkier applesauce, mash the apples less or reduce blending time.
