Hot Honey Halloumi is a quick and flavorful appetizer featuring golden, pan-fried halloumi cheese coated in a spicy, sweet honey glaze with a zesty citrus kick. Perfect for a savory snack or party starter that combines creamy cheese with a tantalizing balance of heat and sweetness.

Ingredients

Halloumi Cheese

  • 1 pack halloumi (200g / 8oz)

Hot Honey Sauce

  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp lime or lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp red chili flakes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Halloumi: Pat the block of halloumi cheese dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture, then slice it into 6 even pieces for uniform cooking.
  2. Make the Hot Honey Sauce: In a shallow bowl or deep plate, whisk together honey, lime or lemon juice, olive oil, and red chili flakes until well combined to create a spicy, sweet glaze.
  3. Coat the Halloumi: Add the sliced halloumi to the honey sauce mixture, turning each slice to fully coat both sides in the flavorful glaze.
  4. Heat the Skillet: Place a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and allow it to get very hot before cooking to ensure a crispy golden crust.
  5. Cook the Halloumi: Using tongs or a fork, transfer the coated halloumi slices from the sauce to the hot skillet, spacing them apart. Cook each side until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Simmer with Remaining Sauce: Pour any leftover honey sauce from the bowl into the skillet and simmer for about 30 seconds to thicken slightly, then return the halloumi to the skillet to soak in the sauce briefly.
  7. Serve Immediately: Transfer the hot honey halloumi with the glaze onto a serving plate and enjoy immediately while warm and melty.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, ensure the halloumi is well dried before slicing.
  • Adjust chili flakes amount to control the spice level.
  • Serve with fresh lime wedges or as a topping over salads or roasted vegetables for variety.
  • This dish is best enjoyed immediately as halloumi tends to harden as it cools.
