This homemade pizza sauce is a rich and flavorful base made from crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, infused with garlic, herbs, and a hint of spice. It simmers slowly to develop depth, making it perfect for elevating your pizza to restaurant-quality at home.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 6 oz. can tomato paste
  • 1/2 Tbsp sugar
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • Freshly cracked black pepper, about 10-15 cranks
  • 1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Sauté Garlic: Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a sauce pot over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until the garlic is soft and fragrant but not browned, to build a flavorful base.
  2. Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Stir in the 28 oz. can of crushed tomatoes, 6 oz. can of tomato paste, 1/2 tablespoon sugar, 3/4 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon dried basil, 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, freshly cracked black pepper (about 10-15 cranks), and a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes if using. Mix everything well to combine the flavors thoroughly.
  3. Simmer Sauce: Cover the pot and bring the mixture to a simmer. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer gently for at least 15 minutes, though up to 30 minutes is ideal. This slow simmer allows the flavors to meld beautifully, resulting in a rich homemade pizza sauce.

Notes

  • Simmering longer (up to 30 minutes) enhances the sauce’s flavor and thickens it slightly.
  • Adjust the crushed red pepper flakes based on your spice preference or omit for a milder sauce.
  • This sauce can be refrigerated for up to a week or frozen for up to 3 months for convenience.
  • Use fresh herbs if available, but dried herbs work perfectly for deeper flavor concentration.
  • If the sauce tastes too acidic, a little extra sugar can help balance the flavor.
