Crispy and golden homemade fried onion rings that replicate the classic diner-style side dish. These onion rings are coated in flour, dipped in a rich egg and milk mixture, and then crunchy panko bread crumbs before being perfectly fried to a delightful crispness.

Ingredients

Onion Rings

  • 1 large onion, sliced into 1/2-inch thick slices and separated into rings

Batter and Coating

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil (about 2 inches deep for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Bowls: Set up three small bowls: place flour in one, beat together eggs and milk in the second, and put the panko bread crumbs in the third bowl.
  2. Coat Onion Rings: Take the onion rings and dredge them first in the flour, ensuring they are lightly coated. Next, dip them into the egg and milk mixture fully. Finally, coat each ring thoroughly with the panko bread crumbs. Place them on a separate plate as you finish coating all the rings.
  3. Heat Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a small saucepan to a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 375°F, ideal for frying the onion rings to a crispy texture without absorbing excess oil.
  4. Fry Onion Rings: Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil. Fry them for approximately 2-3 minutes on each side or until they turn a golden brown color. Fry in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the pan.
  5. Drain and Season: Using a slotted spoon or tongs, transfer the fried onion rings to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. While still hot, sprinkle them lightly with salt to enhance flavor and maintain crispness.
  6. Serve: Serve the onion rings warm with your preferred dipping sauce such as ranch dressing for the perfect side dish or snack.

Notes

  • Make sure the oil is at the correct temperature of 375°F to achieve crispy onion rings without being greasy.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan while frying as it lowers the oil temperature and results in soggy rings.
  • Use panko bread crumbs for extra crunch compared to regular breadcrumbs.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the flour and bread crumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
  • Allow onion rings to drain well on paper towels to remove excess oil before serving.
