This high-protein ice cream uses frozen bananas and protein powder to create a creamy, nutritious treat that requires no ice cream maker. Available in chocolate and vanilla flavors, it is quick to make, dairy-free, and customizable with simple wholesome ingredients.

Ingredients

Chocolate Ice Cream

  • 2 frozen bananas, peeled and chopped into chunks
  • ¼ cup dairy-free milk (unsweetened almond milk recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons almond butter or peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • ½ tablespoon chocolate chips or cacao nibs (optional)

Vanilla Ice Cream

  • 2 frozen bananas, peeled and chopped into chunks
  • ¼ cup dairy-free milk (unsweetened almond milk recommended)
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare Chocolate Ice Cream: Place frozen bananas, almond milk, almond or peanut butter, cocoa powder, and chocolate protein powder into a food processor or high-speed blender. Pulse and process until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy, which should take about 3 to 4 minutes. You might need to turn off the motor and stir the mixture a few times to blend evenly.
  2. Add Mix-ins: Add cacao nibs or chocolate chips if using, then pulse once more just to combine them evenly without breaking them down.
  3. Serve or Freeze: Spoon the ice cream directly into a bowl to enjoy immediately as soft serve. For a scoopable texture, transfer the mixture into a loaf pan lined with parchment paper and freeze for 2 hours. Once firm, scoop and serve.
  4. Prepare Vanilla Ice Cream: Similarly, place frozen bananas, almond milk, vanilla protein powder, vanilla extract (or vanilla bean paste), and cinnamon into the food processor or blender. Process as before until smooth and creamy, around 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Serve or Freeze Vanilla: Spoon into a bowl for immediate enjoyment or freeze in a lined loaf pan for 2 hours to scoop later like traditional ice cream.

Notes

  • Use ripe bananas for best natural sweetness and creaminess.
  • You can substitute dairy-free milk with any milk of choice.
  • For a more intense chocolate flavor, increase cocoa powder slightly.
  • If you want a softer ice cream, reduce freezing time accordingly.
  • Protein powders vary in sweetness and flavor; adjust ingredients to taste.
  • Mix in nuts, berries, or other toppings after blending for extra texture.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 1 week.
