Ground General Tso's Chicken is a quick and healthier take on the classic takeout dish, featuring ground chicken cooked with crunchy water chestnuts and tossed in a tangy, sweet, and spicy General Tso's sauce. Ready in just 20 minutes, this dish delivers all the bold flavors of the original but with less fuss and fewer calories.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 8 ounces canned water chestnuts, diced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

General Tso's Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Cook Chicken and Water Chestnuts: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the ground chicken and diced water chestnuts. Let the chicken cook undisturbed until it forms a good crust, then break it apart with a spatula and continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes until fully cooked.
  2. Add Aromatics and Spices: Stir in the minced ginger, minced garlic, and crushed red pepper flakes. Cook for about 10 seconds to release their flavors without burning.
  3. Prepare General Tso's Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together rice vinegar, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, water, sugar, and cornstarch until smooth and combined.
  4. Combine Sauce with Chicken: Pour the prepared General Tso's sauce into the pan with the chicken. Bring it to a boil while stirring continuously. Cook for a few seconds until the sauce thickens and coats the chicken evenly.

Notes

  • For extra heat, increase the crushed red pepper flakes or add a dash of chili garlic sauce.
  • Serve this dish over steamed rice or with stir-fried vegetables for a complete meal.
  • Ensure the sauce thickens slightly to coat the chicken well but avoid overcooking to prevent a gummy texture.
  • Water chestnuts add a desirable crunch but can be omitted or substituted with sliced bamboo shoots.
