This Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteak is an easy, flavorful twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak sandwich using ground beef. Combining sautéed onions, green peppers, and garlic with seasoned ground beef, simmered in a savory broth thickened with cornstarch, and layered between a crusty French bread loaf with creamy mayonnaise and melted provolone cheese, this recipe makes for a comforting and delicious meal perfect for family dinners or sliders.

Ingredients

Beef Mixture

  • 24 ounces lean ground beef
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, grated
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup low sodium beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Sandwich Assembly

  • 1 large French bread loaf or bread of choice
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 8-12 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef. In a pan over medium-high heat, add the ground beef. Cook until the beef is fully browned and no longer pink, then drain any excess fat from the pan.
  2. Sauté vegetables and seasonings. To the same pan, add the sliced onion, grated garlic, sliced green pepper, steak seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
  3. Prepare and add broth mixture. In a measuring cup, whisk together cornstarch and low sodium beef broth until smooth. Pour this mixture into the pan with the beef and vegetables. Stir well and let it simmer for 1-2 minutes until the mixture slightly thickens.
  4. Prepare the bread. Slice the French bread loaf horizontally. Spread the bottom half of the loaf evenly with mayonnaise, then layer with four slices of provolone cheese.
  5. Add the beef filling and cheese. Spoon the beef and vegetable mixture evenly over the cheese layer on the bottom half of the bread. Then cover the mixture with an additional four slices of provolone cheese.
  6. Assemble and bake. Spread mayonnaise on the top half of the bread as well, then place it on top of the sandwich. Wrap the entire sandwich tightly in aluminum foil. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30-35 minutes until the cheese is melted and the sandwich is heated through.
  7. Slice and serve. Remove the sandwich from the oven, unwrap foil, slice into portions, and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • You can customize seasoning according to your taste preference, adding more or less steak seasoning and salt.
  • This recipe works great for sliders—use smaller rolls or buns and adjust quantities accordingly.
  • Leftover sandwich can be wrapped and refrigerated, then reheated in the oven wrapped in foil to maintain moisture.
  • For a spicier kick, consider adding sliced jalapeños or hot sauce to the beef mixture.
  • Using low sodium beef broth helps control the overall saltiness of the sandwich.
