Ingredients

Vegetables

  • 4 cups broccoli florets, cut into bite size pieces
  • ½ yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (for sauce)
  • Sliced green onions (as garnish)

Meat

  • 1 pound lean ground beef

Sauce

  • ½ cup beef broth
  • ⅓ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Seasonings

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Serving

  • Rice (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Steam broccoli: In a pot with a steamer basket, bring a few inches of water to a boil. Add the broccoli florets and steam for 4-5 minutes until tender but still firm. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Brown beef and onions: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and diced yellow onion, sautéing until the beef is fully browned. Season with salt and pepper. Add 2 cloves minced garlic and sauté for another minute. Reduce heat to medium-low to keep warm.
  3. Prepare sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, 1 clove minced garlic, ground ginger, and cornstarch until smooth and well combined.
  4. Combine and cook: Add the steamed broccoli back to the skillet with the beef. Pour the prepared sauce over the mixture and stir well to combine. Continue sautéing until the sauce thickens and evenly coats the beef and broccoli.
  5. Serve: Serve the ground beef and broccoli mixture hot over steamed rice. Garnish with sliced green onions and enjoy!

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of brown sugar or soy sauce to taste for a sweeter or saltier sauce.
  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease; drain if needed after browning.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute tamari for regular soy sauce.
  • Make sure not to overcook the broccoli during steaming; it should be tender but still crisp.
  • This recipe can be doubled easily for larger groups.
