Crispy and flavorful fried broccoli nuggets coated in a savory batter and panko bread crumbs, perfect as a snack or side dish. This quick recipe creates golden-brown broccoli bites with a deliciously crunchy exterior and tender interior.

Ingredients

Broccoli

  • 1 head broccoli (about 4 cups of florets)

Batter Dry Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup flour (gluten-free flour mixes work great!)
  • 2 tablespoon corn starch (or potato starch)
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt (reduce for lower sodium or if using seasoning with salt in it)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric

Batter Wet Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup water

Coating

  • 3/4 cup panko bread crumbs

Frying

  • 3 inches neutral flavored oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Wash Broccoli: Wash the head of broccoli under running water, then shake off the excess water to prepare it for cutting.
  2. Cut into Florets: Cut the broccoli florets off the head into bite-sized pieces, removing the large central stem. Aim for similar sizes for even cooking.
  3. Prepare the Breading: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, corn starch, baking soda, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and turmeric.
  4. Make the Batter: Pour the water into the dry ingredients and stir continuously until the batter is smooth without lumps.
  5. Prepare Panko Coating: Place 3/4 cup of panko bread crumbs in a shallow bowl ready to coat the broccoli.
  6. Coat Broccoli in Batter: Submerge the broccoli florets into the batter, tossing them to ensure they are fully coated.
  7. Heat Oil: Heat the neutral-flavored oil in a deep pan to 334°F (about medium-high heat), ensuring it’s hot enough for frying.
  8. Fry the Broccoli: Use tongs to carefully place the coated broccoli pieces into the hot oil. Be cautious of bubbling and spattering.
  9. Cook Until Golden: Fry the broccoli for 2-3 minutes, or until the batter bubbles slow down and the pieces are golden brown and crispy.
  10. Drain and Serve: Immediately remove the fried broccoli with tongs and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot for best taste.

Notes

  • Use gluten-free flour mixes if you want a gluten-free version.
  • Adjust salt according to your dietary needs or if your seasoning contains salt.
  • Ensure oil temperature is stable before frying for even golden crispiness.
  • Serve immediately to maintain crunchiness as the fried broccoli can soften over time.
  • You can add your favorite dipping sauce like ranch, spicy mayo, or soy sauce for extra flavor.
