A simple yet elegant holiday appetizer featuring creamy goat cheese topped with warm, sweet fig jam, crunchy pecans, and fresh thyme. Ready in under 10 minutes, this flavorful dip is perfect for entertaining and can be prepared ahead of time.

Ingredients

Cheese Base

  • 300 g (10 oz / about 1¼–1⅓ cups) goat cheese, softened

Topping

  • ½ cup fig jam
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ¼ cup pecans, chopped
  • 2–3 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves removed
  • Sea salt, to taste

To Serve

  • Crostini or crackers, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Goat Cheese: Spread the softened goat cheese evenly onto a shallow bowl or serving plate. Drizzle with olive oil to add richness and a delightful flavor base.
  2. Warm Fig Jam Mixture: In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk together fig jam, honey, and balsamic vinegar. Warm the mixture for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently until it is smooth and well combined but not boiling.
  3. Cool Slightly: Remove the pan from the heat and let the fig jam mixture cool for about 5 minutes to prevent the toppings from becoming too hot and to allow the flavors to meld.
  4. Top the Goat Cheese: Spoon or gently spread the warm fig jam mixture over the goat cheese base, covering evenly to create a sweet and tangy layer.
  5. Add Crunch and Herbiness: Sprinkle chopped pecans and fresh thyme leaves over the fig jam layer to add texture and aromatic freshness.
  6. Season and Serve: Finish with a pinch of sea salt to enhance all the flavors. Serve immediately with crostini or crackers, or assemble ahead and bring to room temperature before serving.

Notes

  • Herbs: Substitute rosemary for thyme if preferred for a more piney flavor.
  • Sweetener: Maple syrup can replace honey for a different sweetness profile.
  • Jam Alternatives: Apricot jam or cranberry sauce can be used if fig jam is not available.
  • Nuts: Walnuts make a good substitute for pecans, offering a similar texture and taste.
  • Make-Ahead: This appetizer can be assembled a few hours in advance; simply bring to room temperature before serving for best flavor.
