This Easy Naan Bread recipe delivers soft, chewy, and flavorful homemade naan with a subtle garlic aroma. Perfect as a side for curries, grilled dishes, or to enjoy on its own, this naan uses a simple dough enriched with yogurt and egg for extra tenderness and a slight tang. Made with basic ingredients and cooked on a stovetop skillet, it’s quick to prepare and ideal for any meal.

Ingredients

Yeast Mixture

  • ½ cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Dough

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • ¼ cup plain yogurt
  • 1 egg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2½ to 3 cups all-purpose flour

Topping

  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: Combine warm water, instant yeast, and sugar in a large bowl. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes bubbly, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Make Dough: To the yeast mixture, add olive oil, plain yogurt, egg, salt, and 2½ cups of all-purpose flour. Stir until smooth, then gradually add more flour as needed to form a soft dough.
  3. Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead several times until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Preheat Skillet: Heat a skillet over medium heat to prepare for cooking the naan.
  6. Shape Naan: Divide the risen dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into about a 6-inch circle on a floured surface.
  7. Cook Naan: Lightly oil the skillet or use non-stick spray. Cook each rolled dough circle for 2-3 minutes on one side until bubbly and golden brown.
  8. Flip and Cook Other Side: Flip each naan and cook for another 2-3 minutes until fully cooked and golden.
  9. Apply Garlic Butter: Mix melted butter with minced garlic if desired, then brush the bubbly side of each naan with this garlic butter right after cooking.

Notes

  • Make sure the water is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast.
  • Adding yogurt gives the naan its traditional soft texture and slight tang.
  • Kneading the dough well develops gluten, essential for chewy naan.
  • You can cook naan on a cast-iron skillet or any heavy-bottom pan for best results.
  • Brush the naan with butter immediately to keep it moist and add richness.
  • For variation, sprinkle chopped cilantro or nigella seeds on top after brushing with butter.
