This Black Bean Dip is a flavorful and creamy appetizer that's perfect for parties or a quick snack. Made with sautéed onions, jalapeños, garlic, and seasoned black beans, blended to a smooth texture and garnished with fresh cilantro and cotija cheese, this dip combines smoky, spicy, and tangy flavors in every bite.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 jalapeno peppers, sliced in half, seeded and diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 (15.5-ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
  • ½ cup loosely packed fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 3 tablespoons water

Optional Garnishes

  • Fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Cotija cheese, crumbled

Instructions

  1. Saute the aromatics. Heat the extra virgin olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and jalapeno peppers, sautéing for 3 to 4 minutes until they soften. Then add the minced garlic, kosher salt, ground cumin, and chili powder, stirring for another minute to release the flavors.
  2. Blend it all together. Transfer the sautéed ingredients into a food processor. Add the rinsed and drained black beans, chopped fresh cilantro, fresh lime juice, and water. Blend the mixture until smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed by adding more salt or spices to your preference.
  3. Garnish and serve. Spoon the black bean dip into a serving bowl. Garnish with additional chopped cilantro and crumbled cotija cheese if desired. Serve with chips, veggies, or use as a spread for sandwiches and wraps.

Notes

  • For a spicier dip, leave some jalapeño seeds in or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • If you prefer a chunkier texture, pulse the food processor instead of blending completely smooth.
  • Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor; bottled lime juice can alter the taste.
  • This dip can be made a day ahead and refrigerated; bring to room temperature before serving.
  • For a dairy-free option, omit the cotija cheese garnish.
