Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 40 oz apple pie filling (two 20-ounce cans)
  • ½ bag Werther's Original Chewy Caramels (5.4 ounces, about half of a 10.8-ounce bag, cut into 3-4 pieces each)
  • 1 box super moist butter yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup salted butter, melted
  • ½ cup whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F to ensure it’s hot and ready when your cake is assembled.
  2. Prepare Baking Dish: Spray a 9x13 inch baking dish generously with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  3. Add Apple Pie Filling: Dump both cans of apple pie filling into the dish and smooth the surface evenly with a spatula.
  4. Sprinkle Caramels: Take half the bag of caramels, cut each piece into 3 or 4 smaller chunks, and sprinkle them evenly over the apples.
  5. Top with Cake Mix: Evenly spread the dry yellow cake mix over the apples and caramel pieces, smoothing it out with a spatula.
  6. Combine Butter and Milk: Mix together the melted salted butter and whole milk in a separate bowl until well combined.
  7. Pour Butter Mixture: Slowly drizzle the butter and milk mixture evenly over the top of the dry cake mix, making sure to cover all dry spots for an even bake.
  8. Bake: Place the cake in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 45 minutes until the top is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  9. Rotate Pan: About halfway through baking (approximately 23 minutes), rotate the baking dish to ensure even cooking.
  10. Check for Doneness: The cake is done when it’s golden on top and you can see the apple mixture bubbling along the edges.

Notes

  • Use salted butter as specified to balance sweetness, but unsalted butter can be used with a pinch of salt added.
  • Cutting caramel pieces smaller helps them melt evenly and incorporate into the cake.
  • Rotating the pan midway ensures even browning and baking.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a delicious dessert.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat before serving.
