This no-bake treat is perfect for parties, holidays, or whenever you crave a fun and nostalgic dessert snack.

Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 1700 grams (4 1/2 cups) Rice Chex Cereal
  • 11 oz white chocolate, finely chopped or chips

Coating Mixture

  • 130 grams (1 cup) yellow cake mix
  • 30 grams (1/4 cup) confectioner's sugar
  • 85 grams (1/2 cup) sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Heat Treat the Cake Mix: To ensure safety from raw flour bacteria, preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C), spread the yellow cake mix evenly on a baking sheet, and bake for 5 minutes. Allow the cake mix to cool completely before proceeding.
  2. Melt the White Chocolate: Gently melt the white chocolate by microwaving in 15-second intervals at 50% power, stirring in between to avoid burning. Alternatively, use a bain-marie for slow, even melting. Remove once almost fully melted and stir until smooth.
  3. Coat the Cereal: Place the Rice Chex cereal in a large bowl and pour the melted white chocolate over it. Gently mix to ensure every piece is coated evenly with the chocolate.
  4. Prepare the Powdered Coating: In a large food container with a lid or a large ziplock bag, combine the confectioner's sugar, heat-treated cake mix, and sprinkles. Mix well to blend the dry ingredients.
  5. Combine and Mix: Add the white chocolate coated cereal into the container or bag with the powdered mixture. Seal and shake or mix thoroughly to coat the cereal evenly with the dry ingredients and sprinkles.
  6. Cool and Set: Spread the coated puppy chow on a lined baking sheet and allow it to cool and set for about 30 minutes. Once set, store in an airtight container to keep fresh.

Notes

  • Heat treating the cake mix is important for food safety but can be skipped if you are using heat-treated or pasteurized cake mix.
  • Use good quality white chocolate to ensure smooth melting and better flavor.
  • Be gentle when mixing to avoid breaking the cereal pieces.
  • You can customize this recipe by adding different types of sprinkles or colored sugar.
  • Store the puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
