Delight in the rich and moist Banana Bread Brownies, a delicious twist combining the best of banana bread and fudgy brownies. This recipe features ripe bananas, a creamy sour cream base, and crunchy walnuts, all topped with a luscious browned butter frosting for an irresistible treat perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

For the Brownies

  • 1 1⁄2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1⁄2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3-4 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3⁄4 teaspoon salt
  • 1⁄2 cup chopped walnuts

For the Frosting

  • 1⁄4 cup butter
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 1⁄2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare the Pan: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides to easily lift the brownies out later.
  2. Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, beat together granulated sugar, sour cream, softened butter, and eggs until the mixture becomes creamy and smooth. Then fold in the mashed ripe bananas and vanilla bean paste until evenly combined.
  3. Add the Dry Ingredients: Sift together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Carefully fold these dry ingredients into the wet banana mixture using a spatula until everything is well combined. Stir in the chopped walnuts for added texture and flavor.
  4. Bake the Brownies: Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan. Place it in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean. Let the brownies cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before frosting.
  5. Prepare the Browned Butter Frosting: While the brownies cool, heat 1/4 cup butter in a large pan over medium heat. Stir frequently until the butter boils and turns a golden brown color with a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and transfer the browned butter to a large mixing bowl.
  6. Make the Frosting: To the browned butter, add half of the powdered sugar, vanilla bean paste, and milk. Whisk until smooth, adding more powdered sugar as needed to reach your desired frosting consistency.
  7. Frost and Serve: Spread the frosting evenly over the warm banana bread brownies. Slice into bars, serve, and enjoy the perfect blend of banana bread goodness and brownie decadence!

Notes

  • Ensure bananas are very ripe for maximum sweetness and moisture.
  • Be careful not to overmix once flour is added to avoid dense brownies.
  • Chilling the frosting slightly before spreading can make it easier to handle if it becomes too soft.
  • Walnuts can be substituted with pecans or omitted for a nut-free version.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
