Arepas con Queso are delicious Venezuelan cornmeal patties stuffed with mozzarella cheese, cooked to golden perfection on a skillet. These cheesy, crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside arepas make a perfect snack or meal, ready in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups masarepa flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar (plus more to taste)

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • 2½ cups lukewarm water

Cheese

  • 1½ cups mozzarella cheese (freshly shredded)

Other

  • 1 teaspoon nonstick cooking spray (for the skillet)

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the masarepa flour, salt, and sugar to evenly distribute the flavors.
  2. Add Butter and Cheese: Add the room temperature unsalted butter and 1½ cups of shredded mozzarella cheese to the dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly to incorporate these into the flour mixture.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients and Knead Dough: Pour in ¼ cup of whole milk and slowly add the lukewarm water while mixing continuously. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and workable, adding more water if required to reach the ideal consistency. Allow the dough to rest for about 5 minutes to hydrate fully.
  4. Shape Arepas: Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten each ball into a disc approximately ½ inch thick for even cooking.
  5. Cook Arepas on Skillet: Heat a skillet over medium heat and spray it lightly with nonstick cooking spray. Place the arepas in the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes on each side, or until they develop a golden brown crust that is crisp on the outside.
  6. Cool and Serve: Once cooked, let the arepas cool for a few minutes to set their texture before serving them warm, perfect as a snack or part of a meal.

Notes

  • To check if the arepas are cooked through, tap on them; they should sound hollow.
  • You can substitute mozzarella with other melting cheeses like queso blanco or Monterey Jack for different flavors.
  • If the dough feels too dry, add a little more lukewarm water gradually until soft.
  • Serve the arepas with butter, avocado, or your favorite salsa for extra flavor.
  • Make sure the skillet is at medium heat to avoid burning the outside while the inside cooks fully.
