Crispy golden fries are layered with melted American cheese, sweet caramelized onions, and a tangy homemade animal sauce made from ketchup, relish, vinegar, and mayo. This quick and flavorful dish serves as an irresistible snack or side dish perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

French Fries

  • 24 ounces frozen french fries
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Animal Sauce

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Animal Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together ½ cup mayonnaise, 3 tablespoons ketchup, 2 teaspoons granulated sugar, ½ teaspoon white vinegar, and 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish. Cover and refrigerate to allow the flavors to meld while you prepare the rest of the dish.
  2. Cook the French Fries: Cook 24 ounces of frozen french fries according to package instructions. For best results and extra crispiness, use an air fryer which significantly reduces cooking time.
  3. Caramelize the Onions: Heat a medium skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons olive oil. Add the diced yellow onion and cook for 6 to 8 minutes until softened. Season with salt and pepper, then continue cooking for an additional 5 minutes or until onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Broil the Fries with Cheese: Preheat your oven to broil. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the cooked fries evenly on the sheet. Top the fries with 4 slices of American cheese. Place under the broiler for about 5 minutes, keeping a close watch to ensure the cheese melts perfectly without burning.
  5. Assemble and Serve: Once the cheese is melted, remove the fries from the oven. Top the cheesy fries with the caramelized onions and drizzle generously with the prepared animal sauce. Serve immediately while warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • For crispier fries, use an air fryer instead of oven baking.
  • Keep a close eye on the fries under the broiler to prevent the cheese from burning.
  • The animal sauce can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar in the sauce to suit your sweetness preference.
  • For a vegetarian version, ensure mayonnaise is egg-free or use a suitable alternative.
