Ingredients
Cauliflower Wings
1 medium head cauliflower
⅔ cup gluten free all purpose flour or regular all-purpose flour
⅔ cup plain non-dairy milk (almond milk recommended)
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ cup plain gluten free breadcrumbs
Spicy Sesame Sauce
1 tablespoon oil
5 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
⅓ cup low sodium soy sauce or tamari
¼ cup honey or maple syrup
2 tablespoons water or vegetable broth
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1-2 teaspoons sriracha
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon water
Instructions
Prepare the Cauliflower: Cut the cauliflower into medium or small florets to ensure even cooking and easy dipping.
Make the Batter: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the gluten free flour, non-dairy milk, garlic powder, and salt to create a smooth batter.
Coat the Cauliflower: Add the cauliflower florets to the batter and toss until fully coated. Then, toss the battered florets in the gluten free breadcrumbs until well coated for a crispy texture.
Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 370°F (188°C). This should take a couple of minutes.
Air Fry the Cauliflower: Place half of the coated cauliflower florets in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Depending on your air fryer's size, cook in batches to avoid overcrowding, which ensures crispiness.
Cook to Crisp: Air fry the florets for approximately 15 minutes, flipping halfway through for even browning, until golden and crispy.
Prepare the Spicy Sesame Sauce: While the cauliflower cooks, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
Add Sauce Ingredients: Stir in the low sodium soy sauce, honey or maple syrup, water or vegetable broth, toasted sesame oil, rice vinegar, and sriracha. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
Thicken the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 1 teaspoon of water until smooth, then add to the simmering sauce. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens slightly, then remove from heat.
Toss Cauliflower in Sauce: Once the cauliflower wings are cooked and crispy, transfer them to a large bowl. Pour the spicy sesame sauce over and toss gently to coat all the wings evenly.
Serve: Serve immediately as a delicious appetizer or snack. Garnish with extra sesame seeds or chopped green onions if desired.
Notes
For extra crispiness, spray the cauliflower florets lightly with oil before air frying.
You can substitute honey with maple syrup to keep the recipe fully vegan.
Adjust sriracha amounts to control the heat level according to your preference.
This recipe works well with regular all-purpose flour and traditional breadcrumbs if gluten-free is not required.
Make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket to allow hot air to circulate and achieve even crisping.
